Dog Foster Application

Thank you for volunteering as a foster with Friends of Macon County Missouri Animals (FMCMA) and offering to foster a rescue dog who will have a better life, with your help.

FMCMA will provide food, a crate, veterinary care and anything necessary to care for the dog. You will provide housetraining, basic obedience and a loving home environment.

Please be patient with our dogs. They have come from many different situations and some may have never known to depend on humans for love and comfort. While they crave this love and comfort, they may not know how to go about getting it. These dogs have been given a second chance and we feel they deserve to live a life filled with love and happiness.

While FMCMA will make every effort to help match you with a safe, nondestructive dog and one that best fits your lifestyle and schedule, please remember they are living creatures and thus unpredictable. We cannot be held responsible for any damage to either person or property caused by the foster dog.

Responsibilities of foster:

1. Agree to provide a safe and clean living environment for the dog.

2. Agree that the dog will sleep indoors (not outside or in a garage) at night and will not be left alone and unattended. Dogs should sleep in a crate at night.

3. Agree to never let a dog off leash unless the dog is in a securely fenced area.

4. Agree to never tether a dog using a stationary object, such as a tie-out, stake, post, etc.

5. Agree to socialize the dog properly and positively with humans and other pets.

6. Notify Friends of Macon County Missouri Animals IMMEDIATELY of any health concerns, no matter how small, i.e. diarrhea, loss or gain of weight.

7. Agree to give FMCMA 14-calendar days’ notice if I can no longer foster the dog.

8. Take the dog on daily walks. No flexi-leads or retractable leashes of any kind are to be used. Appropriate harnesses, collars, leash (if needed) and identification tag will be provided by FMCMA and should be used at all times. Collar and tags should remain on dogs at all times, even during baths.

9. Agree that any non-emergency vet care I obtain without FMCMA’s approval must be paid at my own expense.

10. Agree that any items purchased for the dog that have not been approved by FMCMA must be paid at my own expense.

11. I understand that the dog is available for adoption and if I decide that I want to adopt the dog, I must go through the adoption process of FMCMA and do so before any approved adopters go forward with meet and greets.

12. Agree to not give or sell the dog to another person, organization, company or animal shelter.

13. Agree to feed the food we provide twice daily. No free feeding. Provide fresh water. Provide medications if necessary. If medication is needed, fill out the medical log appropriately.

14. I understand that I can feed the dog treats that are made specifically for dogs. I will NOT feed table scraps that are not healthy for the dog.

15. Agree to take the dog outside at least 4 times a day or as often as necessary for potty breaks.

16. Agree to give FMCMA access to the dog when asked within a reasonable time period not to exceed 2 days.

17. When altered or has received any surgeries, agree to minimize daily activity until the surgery site is healed. Follow directions given by the vet.

18. Provide basic obedience and leash training to allow the dog to be more adoptable. Use positive reinforcement and patience, with lots of praise! No prong collars, choke chains, bark collars, shock collars or squirt bottles are to be used.

19. Will contact us immediately with any training and/or behavior concerns and agree to work with our veterinarian so they can be addressed appropriately.

20. Will provide monthly preventative medications.

21. Will not allow the dog to be cared for in anyone else’s home but my own unless I receive permission from an FMCMA Representative.

22. Will not take the dog out of town or give to someone else while out of town, unless I receive permission from an FMCMA Representative.

23. Will be available to bring the foster dog to adoption events or, if you cannot attend, provide transportation for the dog to be able to attend, OR allow another volunteer access to the dog to bring to the event.

24. Take cute, clear pictures of your foster dog on a regular basis and provide electronically for websites and Facebook.

25. Have an active Facebook account to stay up to date on the latest happenings and allow easy communication with all other volunteers.

26. FMCMA will provide all approved Veterinary care, food and other supplies needed to properly care for your foster dog. If items are provided (i.e. crate, harness, etc.), these items must be returned to FMCMA when you no longer have an FMCMA foster dog.
